Background of the study
Traditional institutions have long played a fundamental role in shaping political participation and governance at the local level. In Ewekoro Local Government Area, Ogun State, customary leadership structures and community elders contribute to the political discourse and influence decision-making processes. These traditional institutions serve as a bridge between modern administrative frameworks and indigenous practices, ensuring that local governance reflects both contemporary and cultural values (Bamidele, 2023). Their involvement in conflict resolution, community mobilization, and advisory roles has been integral in enhancing political participation among residents. However, the integration of traditional institutions into modern governance systems is not without challenges. There are ongoing debates regarding the balance of power between elected officials and traditional leaders, and whether the latter’s influence may sometimes hinder democratic reforms (Ogunleye, 2024). Recent studies have suggested that the synergy between traditional institutions and formal political structures can lead to more inclusive and contextually relevant governance, provided that clear roles and responsibilities are established (Akinola, 2025). This study aims to critically evaluate how traditional institutions in Ewekoro contribute to political participation and governance, examining the benefits and constraints inherent in this dual system.
Statement of the problem
Despite their historical significance, traditional institutions in Ewekoro face challenges in effectively integrating with modern governance systems. This duality has led to ambiguities in roles and responsibilities, sometimes causing conflicts between elected officials and traditional leaders. The resulting power struggle has contributed to inefficiencies in policy implementation and a diminished level of political participation among the general populace. Furthermore, the lack of formal mechanisms to harness traditional insights into contemporary decision-making processes has often led to the marginalization of indigenous governance practices. This study seeks to address these issues by investigating the factors that hinder the seamless integration of traditional institutions within local governance and their impact on political participation.
Objectives of the study:
To evaluate the contribution of traditional institutions to political participation in Ewekoro.
To identify challenges in integrating traditional and modern governance practices.
To recommend frameworks for harmonizing the roles of traditional and elected leaders.
Research questions:
How do traditional institutions influence political participation in Ewekoro?
What challenges exist in merging traditional leadership with modern governance?
What strategies can improve the integration of traditional institutions into local governance?
Research Hypotheses:
H1: Active involvement of traditional institutions enhances overall political participation.
H2: Role ambiguities between traditional and elected leaders negatively affect governance efficiency.
H3: Establishing clear integration frameworks will improve collaborative governance.
Significance of the study
This study is significant as it investigates the interplay between traditional institutions and modern political participation, offering insights into how indigenous governance can coexist with formal political structures. The findings will be valuable for policymakers, traditional leaders, and political reform advocates seeking to create more inclusive and effective governance frameworks. By addressing integration challenges, the study aims to enhance community participation and promote culturally sensitive governance practices (Olatunji, 2024).
